Drill and ceremonies since this is a topic for discussion why not discuss it here. a concern was brought up about certain deviations from "the Book" (AFMAN 36-2203) aka Drill and Ceremonies Manual level2.cap.gov/documents/u_102703152911.pdf (first time posting a URL so I hope it works) An interest in "Hitting the Wall," our unit never used this method until about the last year or so. however if you notice how narrow our hallways the end result justified the means. When an officer or senior member is on business and Airmen are on break, a courtesy would be to make a path clear so that they can proceed un-hindered. to say that this technique is a form of drill and ceremony would be incorrect it is however a custom bore out of courtesy.

on DnC i think it is incredibly stupid and immature for the flight sergeants to give bogus commands and try to fool members of the flight. drill and ceremony was originally created by military units as an instruction aid in training purposes. in the times of its creation a person who joined or was conscripted into the military may not have known their left from their right to begin with ( although after watching some of our cadets drill i am starting to have doubts about some of todays people as well) it also builds unit cohesiveness and teamwork as if the group does well during D&C they are rewarded. If one person fails to hold up their end the whole group is punished. (if this does not seem fair thats life get used to it) it was also found as a conducive way to move large numbers of people from point A to point B with a minimum of confusion. it also served a about the only way to move an army on the battlefield from the time where one shot muskets came into common use to the end of the first world war. to not follow drill and ceremony properly and to disregard all the old traditions and replace them with your own is a discredit to the reason you are learning them in the first place.
oh and as for hitting the wall it makes sense because of our narrow hallways to do so (if you do not hit the wall yourself i can find a way for you to do it under more power than your own)

it is however a custom bore out of courtesy. It is also good at preventing cadets from being stomped and treaded upon after I've waited entirely too long to get down the hall.

So I guess everyone is in agreement on "hitting the wall"
If someone tells you its improper DnC inform them that it is not apart of DnC rather a courtesy that became a custom

If he wasnt I am things to focus on: 1) the difference between column formation and Line formation 2) how to park a flight (ie for opening instead of having them fall out then back in, just march them to their assigned spots and the same for closing [have the kadets bring backpacks for their books so they dont haveto run to the wall to pick up their papers]) 3) Do your flight Sgt's understand what "Danger Side" is 4) Road Guards 5)Eyes right... while in a moving formation (preferably in a column formation ie pass and review) 6) Pass and Review 7)PT Formations ie "at double arm interval, dress right dress!; right face!; at double arm interval, dress right dress!; half left, face!" (doing this allows the cdt ample room to perform stretches and exercise while maintaining order and discipline. I'm not interested in the queerness of the movement it's the attention to detail and precision that pays off in the end. 8) Corners, harch! 9)Change step, harch! ie taking a half stride instead of a full stride not to be confused with taking a half step which is what you perform after executing a column face movement. 10) marching with a guide (guidon) ie position of the guide in line formation is to left of the first element leader when in column formation the guide leads in front of the third or final element leader who will tell the guide "guide right" when drifting to the left or "guide left" when the guide drifts to the right 11) when navigating past an obstacle (that doesnt require a full facing movement) a flight "Incline to the left/right" not "guide left/right" a "guide-" command is reserved for talking to the guidon
when everyone masters these simple commands then a new family based aerospace movie should be out. until then you guys seriously need to work on drill

let me know if you need any help I did it when I was a cadet and remeber the guidon is supposed to be a little heavy, it's a spear for crying out loud, also if you need anyone to teach the guidon manual I'm usually free on weekends
