most planes (refering to the fuselage of large passenger planes) are positively pressurized so they maintain positive bouyancy (ie they float) however most impacts cause structural damage to the hull that allow the aircraft to equallize and lose buayancy (ie sink).
Also the A/c structures such as the wings and empenage (tail structure) are not pressurized or sealed, so water will begin to enter these structures if given the contact.
and remeber in the 1920's and even past the second world war seaplanes were still a modern means of commercial transportation

The problem is an engine (gas powered) needs essential 3 things to run; fuel, air and ignition If anyone was tried to swim underwater (and or drowned) for any period of time knows first hand what an engine needs that water doesn't have. solution, equipe the plane with a snorkle another problem water is more dense than air a really cool experiment allthough I dont recommend this is to stick your hand out the car window next time you doing 50 mph and try to move it. now next time you are boating stick your hand in the water when you are doing 50 mph. the cool part to this part of the experiment is you dont have to worry about pulling you arm back in the boat because it's no longer there.
Lesson learned a P-40w doing 110kts underwater would not have wings
