Some aircraft (SR-71, MiG 21) have cones that protrude from the front of the engines. Can anyone tell me what those cones are for and why most aircraft don't have them?

That's for the cadets. I'm under the delusion that they will actually put forth effort to find the answer if I ask questions.

I assume that it would be used to provide the needed comression to run the ram Jet. Thes would be a little more aerodynamic than a round blunt object at higer speeds. But as stated here drum.umd.edu/dspace/bitstream/1903/2542/1/umi-umd-2426.pdf• Diffusing the required amount of air needed for engine performance with minimum total pressure loss • Supplying the air with tolerable flow distortion • Minimizing the amount of added external drag to the vehicle • Minimizing both shockwave and viscous losses for good total pressure recovery • Minimizing added mass to the vehicle • Providing a self-starting capability at the required Mach number

OMG! a CDT can actually do research and find the right answer
btw google for those who dont know it can be used as an encyclopedia by using the search bar and instead of typing in the search word put it in a question format, and it will give you the answer or several sites to research. it can also be used as a calculator

Their better be sarcasm in that, once Cavett finds out cadets will do work were all doomed.

They do everything mentioned above by preventing the supersonic shockwave from entering the engine.
