We need to start making a list of things that need done and knocking them out. I'll start off with a few things that I either know will need work, or things we might consider.
1. Rifles. Don't sweat it. We will have some.
2. Shoes. Do we want to pay a shoe store to prep our shoes like the 3rd Infantry? This would probably cost about $100 per pair if we started with new shoes.
3. Is there anything different we want to do with the ceremony?
4. Do we need to come up with something for a track other than concrete?
5. Do we want to prepare some kind of billboard to post or a pamphlet to hand out that has info about the ceremony on it?
6. Do we need a recruiting display?
What all went wrong last year? (or in any other year?) Let's start fixing things now!
I suggest that everyone go to the 3rd Infantry web site (there's a link in the Honor Guard section on the main web page) and read through it to see if they get any ideas.

As far as shoes go, would the corframes still work (if each cadet had a brand new pair). What about heel taps.
My mom mentioned a long strip of black carpet for the track last year. We would have to get the exact lenght(+63ft) and width. This may be a little more cost effective than rubber.
A sign at the entrances would be a good way to get more people to come.
I know we were planning on fine tuning the ceremony a little bit. Duck tape on the shoe while on the track was a little problem.
And a schedule of who is on the track, and when would be nice.

New 'frams would be OK, but the shoes are modified for use by the Tomb Guards. They have built up soles so that the heel and toe are the same height. This allows you to walk more upright and with a straight back. Probably, we would have the heels ripped off and then build up the entire sole about 5/8". We could then make the heel taps, toe guards, and whatever the other metal piece is called.
You can buy rubber mat at hardware stores for a reasonable price. It won't be cheap, but reasonable.
A schedule is a must! I meant to put that on my list, but forgot it.

frame's have an oil resistant plastic sole the leather shoes may be easier to modify and you might be able to get them from tinker surplus or check if someone has a surplus stock of them like any of the ROTC units in town or any other units. the taps you can get from just about any shoe repair store.
if you did a carpet or something like that for the track go with something like red or some color. Black shoes,(Frames are alot hotter when standing in sunlight than leathers), service dress and add that in with a black carpet you will have a miserable day just think about doing this in the middle of august at noon. you just want to cut corners on keeping yourself cool wherever possible while still giving a good presentation

also maybe laying a wreath at the tomb like having the C/CC come out as Sgt and present the wreath it doesnt have to be a CAP wreath you could lay one from the VFW or Blue Star
Also if everyone had thereown service cap and glasses instead of everyone trying to swap hats and devices 3 minutes before they're due out
It's just some ideas we might see if seniors (mainly non-parents, parents are already sponsoring their cadets) can sponsor a couple of the cadets

I didn't realize that svc caps were a problem before. I guess that's something we need to address. I don't want to cut corners anywhere. I want this to be as authentic as possible with what we've got. I think there was a wreath laying last year? ? Training will start ASAP. Probably December. 24 hour guarding will probably not happen, but I would like to try if possible. No name plate? ?

definitly no name plate also i like the shoes idea but that a lot of bucks also the carpet or rubber(preferred needs to be black for similarity sake. Yes we did have a wreath laying ceremony but we only did one and we did so good i think we should do more. training went wrong last year and the year before we started way to late and we pulled it off barely but we need more time. Also I havent talked to lipats yet but we were told rupert and schoonover were in charge of it this year. Just giving you a heads up the ceremony has changed and the only people that know the new ceremony in full are those who went to washington dc and i think that was lipats craig and i, Im not pointing as to who should do it but let me tell you no one stepped up to the plate last year so it took me along with a couple other cadets teaching it which is fine but it just wasnt coordinated well so if no one else has any objections i would like to teach honor guard this year and if lipats wants to also i think it would be awesome. anyway thats just my ideas so post me tell me what you think.

Before you can teach it you have to actually run the gauntlet and prove you pack the gear to serve on my beloved Honor Guard!

From just the looks of things there appears to be quite a few people coming out for HG this year. I was thinking that in this years training we could split the sents. and sgts. up in the first half of the practice, so they can go over what they specifically need ( timing of movements, rifle movements, and rifle inspection) Then come together at the end and practice the ceremony.
I think with a little help i can make "dummy training rifles" out of 2x4s. This would give the new cadets more of a feel for the actual size, and weight (we can add weight to these)
Also for a practice location, it my be just a tid bit nippy in December so if we could find somewhere indoors.
Having everybody with there own Service Cap and Sunglasses is an excellent idea. It really was a mess trying to juggle who was going out, and with what.
No nameplate? As in uniform nameplate?

Guards are nameless they represent the "spirit" of their brothers and sisters in arms. So no nameplate.
In the past it has always been cadets teaching cadets you've got everthing you need time, training, and support so run with it
We've never done a 24-hour rotating guard, we are typically out there when the people are so we usually wrap it up about 1600 give or take a ceremony that's not to say it cant be done but you will get exausted in these three days. Remeber the tomb is also a national monument it, doesn't close activities may suspend but it doesn't close and for a while the 3rd' used to protect it during the day and rent a cop during the evening
Start training my suggestion just after the holidays, HOWEVER... have everything that you can ready to start practice before the banquet. as a matter of fact a demonstration by last years guard at the banquet might be interesting for all the parent to see what there cadets are doing and might show the other seniors as well and could get some support
just a few thoughts

This would give the new cadets more of a feel for the actual size, and weight (we can add weight to these) I'm one step ahead of you. It takes a 2x6 to really get the profile right. I'm thinking that we need to have a weekend gathering with all the Guards and build some rifles. By myself I think I could do maybe two per day. With more people to sand and shape we could crank out enough for everybody in a weekend.

Just for clarity sake when you said: "Before you can teach it you have to actually run the gauntlet and prove you pack the gear to serve on my beloved Honor Guard! " what does that mean anyway.

Just for clarity sake when you said: "Before you can teach it you have to actually run the gauntlet and prove you pack the gear to serve on my beloved Honor Guard! " what does that mean anyway. It means you have to endure a weekend of not so pleasant training in order to earn your place on the team. Don't worry, the only requirement is that you can't quit.
